Invasive Species Presence Observation Teams (I-SPOT)
Aquatic Invasive Species are showing up in Island waterways at an alarming rate causing major problem for shellfish harvesters. Invasive species can reduce populations of native species that harvesters rely on. The I-SPOT project involved developing a monitoring protocol for volunteer monitoring groups to utilize while doing water quality programs. I-SPOT was conducted this past field season in conjunction with the Community Aquatic Monitoring Program (CAMP).

CAMP sampling involves employing a seine net on an estuary, identifying and counting aquatic found and taking water measurements. Comparing long term water quality parameters with specimen numbers can tell the story of survival. Invasive species found this sampling season included green crab and vase tunicate.

Litter
As one of SEA’s areas of concentration, litter is addressed by participating in Adopt-A-Highway and the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean Up. SEA works with local schools and community volunteers to clean up beaches and roadsides in the area. In addition to clean ups, SEA uses litter surveys to categorize the litter in order to identify sources and try to stop it from becoming an issue.

Sustainable Planning
SEA is always thinking about ways to move forward while keeping the local community involved in its mandate. Each year a number of sustainable planning meetings are held internally and open to the public to direct SEA project development. It is a way to increase public involvement and ensure the organization is addressing issues that concern local residents while continuing SEA’s mandate.

Greenlight PEI
SEA maintains an active role on the Greenlight PEI Advisory Committee. Greenlight is a spin off of SEA sponsored A Bright Idea delivered last year. To date greenlight PEI has completed lighting retrofits in 1000 homes and is planning a businesses retrofit component this fall. Visit Website

Panmure Island dune restoration
Panmure Island Sand Dune Restoration
SEA lead a project sponsored by Environment Canada’s EcoAction Program and the PEI Department of Transportation and Public Works to restore the damaged sand dunes at Panmure Island. The project worked with two local schools to make the connection between climate change, their everyday actions and increased storm damage.
